paint activities

What do you do with your little ones on rainy days? Do you maybe build a fort out of sheets or cuddle up and watch a movie? Why not make beautiful works of art made from finger paints! You don’t have any laying around? Oh, they are too expensive?  I have an idea! How about you make your own. I’m going to give you a few step by step recipes to get your craft started!

Homemade Finger-paints

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 3 tbsp. sugar
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • ½ cup corn starch
  • 2 cups waters
  • Food coloring
  • Containers

Do you have all of that ready? Great! Now, combine the ingredients in a small saucepan. Warm it up until the mixtures thickens. The cool and pour into some containers. Now add your food coloring to each container until you have your desired colors and that’s it! You’ve just made your own finger-paints!

Edible Finger-paints

Here’s a good recipe for the young crowd! It’s finger-paint they can create with or eat if they so choose! Here’s what you need-

  • Plain or vanilla yogurt
  • Food coloring or Duncan Hines Frosting Creations packs
  • Containers

Yep that’s it! Put your yogurt into the containers add a few drops of the food coloring or a sprinkle of the Frosting Creations on top and stir!  You’re little ones are set. Be warned Moms this paint is too good not to eat .

Homemade Water-Colors

Feel like planning a special project for the kids? Set this up on the morning of the day you want to do your craft or the day before!  Here’s all you’ll need for your water colors-

  • Washable finger-paint (or the finger paint you just made)
  • Water
  • Ice-cube tray
  • Popsicle sticks

Take 1 tsp. of each finger-paint you would like, place it in each ice cube cubby on the ice tray. Add water to fill to almost the top. Stir. Let it sit for ten minutes and then stir again. Once you’ve stirred the second time around go ahead and stick your popsicle-sticks in. Place it in the freezer to let it set! Once it’s good and frozen find a good place for your kids to go to work. Remember its ice, it’s going to melt quickly!

Apple Scented Bath Finger Paint

This simple recipe will make everyone want to take a bath! Not to mention leave the whole area smelling delicious! Here’s what you need-

  • Shaving Cream
  • Green or Red food coloring
  • Apple Pie Spice

All you need to do is mix the Shaving cream, a few drops of food coloring (not too much you don’t want your little one to stain green!) and Apple Pie Spice. Stir it up and you’re ready to go!! Your kids are going to love this!

These are just few of the many things you can do around the house on rainy day for little to nothing! No more just sitting in front of the TV and tearing up the house because they are bored! I hope your rainy days just got a little bit brighter.
