Easy Homemade Brown Fried Rice

fried rice

I don’t know about you, but once in awhile I crave fried rice; Chinese food is a sincere guilty pleasure mine. Just the other day I was wishing my local Chinese restaurant offered a brown rice alternative for my bitter sweet indulgence! I have tried and failed at making fried rice on a few occasions and eventually gave up trying. Since I am attempting to make healthier eating choices and I honestly needed a fried rice fix, I decided to try my hand at making brown fried rice.

Much to my amazement, my mission was successful! The dish came out delicious and everyone enjoyed it. I will FOR SURE be making this meal again! I had to share this experience with the world, because there are some of you out there like me who have tried fried rice and failed. I urge you to try again, this time could be different! I’ll tell you what I did so you can try it yourself.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups cooked brown rice
  • 2 Chinese sausage links
  • 1 lb uncooked whole shrimp (optional)
  • 1 bunch green onions
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 broccoli crown
  • 1 carrot
  • 6 tablespoons olive oil
  • Various spices (salt, pepper, stir fry seasoning packet)
  • Low sodium soy sauce

These are just the ingredients I had around. You can use whatever meats or vegetables you have handy. I will also add that the rice I used was cooked and then chilled overnight. I have heard that refrigerated rice works better for fried rice. This is the first time I was able to use such rice and I am thinking that had something to do with the successful outcome!

Throwing it all Together

  1. Prepare shrimp by peeling and removing veins
  2. Prepare sausage by cutting into small pieces
  3. Chop all vegetables and onions
  4. Heat wok and add a small amount of oil
  5. Crack and scramble eggs, add them to wok
  6. Allow eggs to cook while you stir constantly
  7. Once eggs start to harden, take them out of wok and put them aside
  8. Taking the eggs out before they are completely cooked will help them to not get overcooked later
  9. Clean egg from wok (If you skip this part, you will deal with burnt egg issues, lesson learned!)
  10. Add a few tablespoon of olive oil and place peeled shrimp in wok
  11. Stir continuously until shrimp is fully cooked then put aside
  12. Shrimp cooks quickly! Be careful not to overcook it.
  13. Heat more olive oil and add vegetables
  14. Stir frequently until vegetables are cooked to your liking
  15. Warm more olive oil in pan
  16. Add rice and stir to break up any clumps
  17. Add sausage, eggs and onions stir and fry for a few minutes, then add vegetables and shrimpAdd soy sauce and spices of your choice, then Stir until everything is well mixed and all ingredients are equally warm

Once rice cools, enjoy! I like to add Sriracha sauce to my rice dishes for an added kick, but you don’t have to, this meal is pretty good all on its own.
