Hair is such an interesting and delicate thing really. We either fall into the category of oily, sun-damaged, fine, normal, or dull, from what I believe. These descriptions led me to research some awkward home hair treatments that help you save money and utilize what their key ingredients are known to do best.
For all basic types of hair, the egg is literally your best friend; not only for its moisturizing qualities, but also to remove those unnecessary oils. The yolk is also high in fats and proteins. A yolk-only based treatment can be done every two weeks, while a whole egg application can be done monthly.
- Use the entire egg as a conditioner for normal hair, the whites of an egg for oily, and just the yolk for moisturizing brittle/dry hair.
- 1/2 cup is fine and is best applied to damp, clean hair. Use more of course for longer locks.
- Be sure to coat the hair and scalp, leaving on for about 20 minutes.
- Rinse with cool water and re-shampoo hair after.
If you suffer from an itchy scalp, it may be due to an unhealthy diet, climate, or stressful conditions, among other things. Surely we remember the uses for olive oil on newborns with cradle cap and adults can benefit from that too.
- Mix 2 Tbsp. olive oil, 2 Tbsp. water, and 2 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice.
- Massage into damp scalp and let absorb for 20 minutes.
- Rinse and shampoo hair. Works best if applied twice per month.
The summer sun, an addiction to the flat iron, and even hard water, can dry out strands causing sun-damaged hair. “Bee” extra nice to your locks and grab the honey from your cupboard.
- Take ½ cup of honey and work into clean, damp hair (feel free to add 1-2 Tbsp. olive oil to loosen the honey, making it easier to apply).
- Let sit 20 minutes before rinsing with warm water.
- Use this treatment once a month.
- If you work, or spend a great deal of time outdoors, mix the honey with 1-2 Tbsp. of avocado. UV rays can break down the keratin protein, but avocado is known to replenish that.
My pre-teen daughter is beginning to experience oily or greasy hair. Sometimes it’s due to genetics or hormonal changes. Cornstarch is so inexpensive and really works to remove the oil and grease in your hair. The great thing about this technique is you can use it every other day.
- Pour 1 Tbsp. of cornstarch or cornmeal into a container and sprinkle it on your hair/scalp. (Consider putting the cornstarch in an empty salt shaker for less of a mess).
- Allow it to sit for about 10 minutes before brushing it out. A paddle-type brush works really well.
