It’s a beautiful summer Saturday morning. You look around your cozy apartment and realize it’s time for a garage sale, but your complex will not allow for it. The frustration begins to set in. We have good news for you. Don’t be discouraged, we have a few tips for you to be able to have that sale even though you live in an small confined space.
Go to the streets
Even thought your complex might not allow for you to have a yard sale inside your complex, get creative and have a sidewalk sale. I have seen this done in many cities in my travels and all you are virtually doing is having your sale on the street corner versus a driveway of sorts. If you decide to have your sale a few things you will want to do before hand. Check with your city to make sure you do not need a special type of permit. You might have to get the okay to be able to hold your sale. Also, it might be wise to check with your apartment manager even though you have already cleared it with the city. It looks good on you as a tenant. Always save face with those you interact with daily.
Go to the Internet
Do you have a few big ticket items that are worth more than “garage sale” prices? If so, take it to the web. Advertise your items on a site such as Craigslist, Ebay or Amazon. This will help you to get rid of the item but get the biggest return on your treasured item.
Buddy up
See if any of your friends or family that are in the area that have a house might be willing to do a combined garage sale. These will often times attract more buyers also because there is more stuff to look through. Be sure you organize it in a way that you know whose items are whose so everyone gets their money. Maybe you can’t find any friends or family that want to have a garage sale at the present time, if so, then ask if you can borrow their lawn for a morning. I’m sure they will be willing to let you all you have to do is ask. What can it hurt?
Flea Market
In some cities you might have access to a flea market or swap meet. Often times we think of these places that only registered vendors can sell at. However, that is just not the case. Many cities have flea markets that you can enter for just one day. If so, get your name on the list and get your items down to the market to get them sold. You will be glad you did.
Donate, Donate, Donate
Your time is valuable. Remember the goal at hand is to get rid of the items you are willing to part with. So after you have your sale, take the unwanted items and donate them to a local goodwill or charity. They will give you a receipt to be able to write off the items value on your taxes, and you get to wash your hands of all those items that have been cluttering up your space.
See, it can be done. What are you waiting for? Get started and have that sale, just because you live in an apartment doesn’t mean you can’t.
